When Packing Up Your Self-Storage Unit |
- Try to use boxes that are generally the same size. This will make them easier to stack. *Remember to always stack your heavier boxes on the bottom.
- You should always try to leave a small walkway area between the boxes and the furniture in your storage unit so you can easily get to your items without having to rearrange the unit or move things.
- Even though most storage units are equipped with security systems, you can take an extra precaution by putting your valuable belongings in the back of your unit and use a high quality padlock.
- If you will be stacking the boxes in your unit, be sure to fill each box to the top even if it's just with old newspaper or paper bags. The reason for this is that boxes that are only half filled have a tendency to collapse if something is placed on top of them
- If you will be storing any metal objects in your unit, like lawnmowers or file cabinets, you should treat them with a rust protector or at least wipe them down with oil.
- If you will be storing a refrigerator, make sure that you leave the door slightly ajar to prevent mold from growing inside of it.
- Humidity can warp furniture and cause appliances to mildew. To prevent this, leave a space between your stuff and the unit walls which allows air to circulate in the unit. A plastic sheet on the floor or stacking boxes on wooden pallets can protect against condesation damage.
- *WARNING Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you keep anything flammable or combustible in your storage unit. This means no gasoline, oil, cleaning fluids, or paint thinner. If you are storing any machinery that runs on gas, drain the tank before you store it.
